Happy Holidays everybody!

25 Dec

This has been the most unproductive week of my life.

I’ve been milking this winter break for all that it’s worth. Activities include: sleeping, browsing the Internet, listening to dope music (bumpin’ Mos Def’s Black On Both Sides right now, one of the only albums that I can seriously listen to from top to bottom), spending time with my family, going to Saginaw’s wack ass Fashion Square Mall and talking on the cellie a whole lot. Had a huge to-do list at the beginning of the week, but I haven’t finished a damn thing on that list – still have millions of interviews to type, millions of contacts to re-establish, millions of new contacts to acquaintance myself with, tons of money to make, and tons of reading to do (that’s one thing I’m trying to do more of this year). On the bright side, I’ve finally finished this damn cover letter (with extensive help/ass whupping from Marlon Walker) to send to these newspapers in Florida, hopefully get this summer internship and make shit happen. I’m locking myself down this week though – I really need to finish this shit so I can start off the new semester with a clean slate, and I need to line myself to make some major moves (Kelley, we shall talk soon – I’m trying to step my freelance game up and get on your level).

On the gift-giving tip, I’m pretty proud of myself this year. I only purchase two gifts each Christmas: one for my pops, one for my younger brother. Normally the process of picking a gift is pretty irritating, because I can never think of appropriate gifts – but this year, I think I chose the perfect presents. I got my dad this book called “Black Genius: African American Solutions to African American Problems,” and I got my brother the “Rudy” DVD. Got some gifts they’ll actually enjoy, and not just appreciate because they got them – and that’s a first. What are some dope gift choices y’all have made?

By the way, here’s some brief music reviews (since I’m the authoritative source and all, lol):
-Jamie Foxx, Unpredictable: For an actor, solid effort. Still, people don’t realize that he was a musician before this – and with that in mind, for an R&B album in 2005, Unpredictable is actually the exact opposite of its title. A few baby-making tracks, guest appearances, and a couple stellar tracks to end the album make it worth the download, though (yeah, I said it).
-Lil Wayne, Tha Carter II: Cash Money’s new capo pulls his own weight, sans Mannie Fresh production. The most surprising album of the year.
-Anthony Hamilton, Ain’t Nobody Worryin’: This is what Soul/R&B is all about. Please don’t sleep – dude’s not to be fucked with.
-J. Dilla (aka Jay Dee), Donuts: The best producer in hip-hop, period (in my opinion). One of the strongest instrumental albums I’ve ever heard, and one of the strongest instrumental albums I’ll hear for a while.

Next post, I’m going to post my article on Oddisee in the new issue of ELEMENTAL magazine (Issue 73, Big Boi on the cover), get your feedback on it. By then, I should have finished a lot of my other articles too. All of my people, keep on me – when I talk to you on AIM, cuss me out and ask me how much work I’ve finished.

Till then, happy holidays, and comment damnit!
