"I’m On My Grind Cousin, Ain’t Got Time For Frontin…"

The plug:

Jamie Foxx finally got the recognition he deserved in 2005. With an Oscar under his belt for his stirring portrayal of Ray Charles, and other noteworthy performances in “Collateral” and “Jarhead,” the talent that was so obvious to viewers of “In Living Color” became evident to the rest of the world. While his dramatic parts were consistently convincing, his humorous roles always shined with splices of his own personality — even through atrocities like “Bait” and “Booty Call.” After taking so long to establish a trademark of his own, his new LP, Unpredictable, disappoints by focusing more on others’ accomplishments rather than his own.
-From my review of Jamie Foxx’s album on BallerStatus.net … I know you want to read the rest, so here’s the link: http://www.ballerstatus.net/reviews/read/id/42103861/

The quote in this week’s title is from Jay-Z’s “Heart Of The City (Ain’t No Love),” from his album The Blueprint. That line definitely defines my life right now. I’m back at good ol’ Michigan State Univ., back on the academic grind (it’s already starting back, these professors aren’t playing around). School is going to be a bit more stressful this semester, just because I’m making myself put more effort into it, but I’m sure that I’ll be fine. As long as I get this time management thing going, I’ll take care of business even more efficiently than I had before.

What I’ll really be grinding on for the next month is these journalism articles. I’ve gotten away from the name-dropping recently, but I’ve gotta let y’all know who these artists are right now just because I’m so excited about them.

If all goes as planned, combining work through my print outlets and my online outlets, I’ll be interviewing Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Busta Rhymes, Cee-Lo, Jazze Pha (if Cee-Lo falls through), Mobb Deep, Apathy (Atlantic Records, underground rep with Demigodz and Army of the Pharaohs – don’t sleep) and Robin Thicke – all over the next month and change. And that’s just with the people I’m already established with; I’m steadily building relationships with other publications, and I’m also hitting some more publications up right now. Hopefully I’ll build up with the other places too, so I can continue to expand my hustle and get more pieces out there.

I don’t just do artist features either. I’ve got some newsy/informational articles in the works where I’m doing more research, and I think these magazines are going to feel these ideas. We’ll see though. Just know that I’m a lot farther where I’ve been, and soon, I’m going to be a lot farther than where I am.

Can’t leave hip-hop journalism alone – the game needs me.

(And I need the game too, cuz a brotha needs some cash.)

You just make sure you keep your eyes ont he prize – and those internships we’re working on!

The Jamie joint was wells aid – and on point. I would’ve said a little more for his lack of style, especially when we KNOW he can sing his ass off.

I’m sick of Ray Charles impersonations. Let it go!

I agree with you on the most part with your Jamie Foxx review, but it is overall a good album in my opinion.

Good to read another way to look at it.

That line by Jay-Z is exactly the phase I’m in right now also. I found your blog by just doing a random search on google trying to see if anyone else felt the same way/was using that line. Haha, but I’ve modified the line a little bit to fit Facebook, and I’ve also added a Pirates of the Carribean/Jack Sparrow word in there. So if someone asks me what I’m up to these days, my answer is:

    “I’m on my grind, savvy?”
