The Wackness: Mixtape (Download Link)

6 Oct

I know I’m a bit on the late train with this, but better late than never.

The movie The Wackness came out earlier this summer. Though I admit that I haven’t gotten to see the film itself, I’ve heard positive feedback from my homies that have. A synopsis of the film, via IMDB:

Its the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana. The newly-inaugurated mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, is only beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against crimes like noisy portable radio, graffiti and public drunkenness.

The Wackness centers upon a troubled high school student named Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck)a teenage pot dealer who forms a friendship with Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Ben Kingsley), a psychiatrist and kindred lost soul. When the doctor proposes Luke trade him weed for therapy sessions, the two begin to explore both New York City and their own depression.

I admit that I’m a sucker for almost all things hip-hop, but the soundtrack mixtape they put out there is undeniable. The tracklist includes: Tribe Called Quest, Biggie, Nas, KRS, Group Home, Biz Markie, the Wu, and others. Nothing here is brand new music, and that’s the point: the music here all perfectly fits the era, and it’s got the perfect mix of obvious classics (“Can I Kick It”) and slept-on heaters (“Supa Star”) to both take old heads back and educate the youngsters. What I like about this is that it doesn’t feel like some random mix of old shit just meant to say that it’s old school” – this feels like it was actually put together by someone who was around during that time period.
