Common Be Gladiator Pimpin’

24 Nov

I absolutely hated the first two leaks from Common’s approaching album, Universal Mind Control. As big of a Common fan as I am, I’ve just felt that based on what I’ve heard so far, it’s going to be exactly like Electric Circus – except it’s not going to be the grower that Dilla’s experimentation was on that album. “UMC” just isn’t my speed, and “Announcement” is pure ass. Both Common and Pharrell/Neptunes have done better, and I’m hoping that the album shows their true talent and displays some undeniable chemistry between the two. Still, I’m not optimistic – I’m sure it’ll have a few bangers, though.

One of those bangers has just emerged in “Gladiator.” To me, it perfectly executes what I was hoping this album would do: meshes a synthy, electronic sound with Comm’s hard, energetic rhymes. It’s still frustrating to me that the first two leaks are so off to me, but I’m loving this one. Check it out in the player below.

There have also been two leaks of older material that he did with J Dilla: “Pimpin'” and the original version of Be’s title track. Both of these vintage joints are great – both for Common’s flows and for J. Yancey’s backdrops – but hopefully their emergence isn’t a sign that the production on UMC is subpar. Listen to each of these songs in the players below as well.

What do you guys think of these three leaks? Looking forward to Universal Mind Control?

Common’s been losing me. I’ll admit I think he’s an overrated emcee, regardless of what album we’re talking about. That said, he’s dropped some semi and certified classics over his career. Finding Forever didn’t jive with me at all, though. Too many of his rhymes felt hollow and like he was just trying to “be” that conscious emcee everyone identifies him as. I haven’t dug much of what I’ve heard from this album, though I’m agreeing with you that this Gladiator joint is a nice little heat rock.

Gladiator is a nice track…and I prefer Kanye’s version of Be better than Dilla’s
