Royce Da 5’9″ – “Shake This” b/w “Part of Me”

19 Dec

I’ve avoided the premature leak of Royce’s album for months, and now that he’s releasing some of the songs on his own, I’m glad I’ve waited. Street Hop, the long-awaited Royce Da 5’9″ album executive produced DJ Premier, is set for an April 21st release with ONE Records. “Shake This” and “Part of Me” – produced by Premier and Carlos Broady, respectively – are the first two offerings from the disc.

Armed with a reflective instrumental from DJ Premier, Royce gives a stirring tale of his battle with alcoholism and the repercussions that came of it. This is a perfect record from top to bottom. Each verse progresses perfectly into the next – he goes from early despair and the premonition of his downfall, to hitting rock bottom by landing in jail, and ends it with a tale of redemption. The beat progresses subtly as well, something that one may not expect from the back-to-basics methods of Primo. A great combination of displaying his talents and vulnerability.

“Part Of Me”

Another spellbinding record that sees Royce flexing his storytelling skills. Over a signature dark, minimalistic soundbed from Carlos Broady, he tells the story of a club encounter-turned menage a trois-turned epic fail. The concept has some shock value, but the song is written thoroughly. And the way that the hook comes full circle is amazing.

Congrats in advance to Royce, Kino, and the entire M.I.C. camp. It looks like he’s got a classic on the way.
