And Y’all Thought Wanda Sykes Was Bad?

12 May

People on both sides of the political spectrum were upset over Wanda Sykes’ jokes at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this week. For those who missed it, Sykes went in on conservative pundits Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. Limbaugh has said that he hopes Obama’s administration fails, and Sykes used that as ammo to joke that Limbaugh was probably one of the September 11 hijackers, but that he was “so strung out on OxyContin that he missed his flight.” She then said, in response to Limbaugh saying that he hopes America fails, “I hope his kidneys fail.”

But as this Gawker article pointed out, this is nowhere near as harsh as Stephen Colbert’s segment at the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with President George W. Bush in office. For those who aren’t familiar, Colbert’s character – a brilliant parody of the most extreme, bigoted right-wingers there are – was so hilarious on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart that he got his own show, The Colbert Report, which has been one of the few spinoff shows of anything that’s actually worth a damn. Colbert’s speech at the 2006 dinner was so epic that it has its own Wikipedia page (and yes, that’s the judge of whether something matters or not). In the video above, check how he swipes at Vice President Dick Cheney’s hunting fiasco literally as soon as his act begins. “Oh, he’s not here?”

Check the other two clips below the jump. But Wanda Sykes told jokes; Stephen Colbert made a presentation.

With how crazy Colbert went in on Bush and co. two years ago, right-wing America should be counting its blessings. Colbert clowned the hell out of the President of the United States, while Sykes just clowned members of the media that are already hated. And while the Limbaugh joke was especially harsh, what did they think they’d get when they brought aboard Wanda Sykes? Sykes has made a career out of making people uncomfortable, so she wasn’t going to stop on her biggest stage. And at the end of the day, as rude as they may have been, they were actually funny. Politically incorrect comedians tell politically incorrect jokes, and while people like Wanda Sykes and Stephen Colbert go overboard once in a while, they still do what they do very well.
