The 25 Funniest Celebrity Twitter Hacks (COMPLEX)

22 Jun

My second piece for COMPLEX was one of the most fun, and most challenging pieces I’ve had to write. In another article for their TECH section, I made a list of the 25 funniest celebrity Twitter hacks. The hacks aren’t just hip-hop artists, either: rappers, singers, professional athletes, and even politicians get got in this list. I’m just now realizing that the site doesn’t allow copy and paste, so I won’t use any text, ha – just check the article.

Kanye West x COMPLEX Magazine

23 Mar

Wow.

This feature is flawless. The interview? Perfect. The photoshoot? Incredible. The video interview? Dope.

Kanye’s always been a creative guy, and that’s been evident from College Dropout to 808s & Heartbreaks. But the way that this feature is put together is a real testament to that. And this is straight from my man who works at COMPLEX, who says, “Gotta give it up to Ye; it was all his idea.” I’ve often been sort of annoyed when rappers try too hard to be involved with a piece, just because I take pride in my writing talent/style, and they’ll try to change things that I don’t think need changing. I’m really impressed with how this came out, though.

Speaking of public outbursts, why is it that you’ll flip on a journalist, like the dude from EW who shitted on the tour, but not another rapper that disses you?

Kanye West: Because I feel like I’m playing on the same intellectual level of a journalist and not of a rapper.

How so?

Kanye West: [Laughs.] I feel like if a rapper disses me, they’re just trying to get a rise out of me and get me to play in their field to find some way that they can beat me. I feel like there’s a lot of rappers that can beat me in ignorance. So why would I play a sport that I’m not particularly trying to get better at or beaten in? There’s a lot of rappers that can beat me in ignorance, but there’s only a few that can play with true intellect. [Long pause.] How fucking perfect is that fucking answer?

10 Exclusive Retail Deals For Rap’s New Generation (COMPLEX)

6 Mar

I know, I literally just posted another COMPLEX blog. But I stumbled across both of them at the same time, and I thought they deserved separate posts. In this one, they cleverly flip the news of Prince releasing a three-album set exclusively with Target to put together similar deals for the new generation of emcees. Aside from the Wale pick (maybe it’s just me, but I don’t get it), all of these are hilarious and dead-on. Here’s the deal for Blu (pictured above):

Album Sold Exclusively At: Whole Foods
Sales Promotion: Get the album for 20% more than it would cost anywhere else! What?! It was recorded organically. Be cool, man

COMPLEX – “A Day In the Life of Kanye West, Fashion Intern”

16 Dec

BFred, you son of a gun.

For whoever hasn’t heard already, Kanye West said that he’s going to offer his intern services to a fashion house like Louis Vutton. While it was surprising to hear him say that – and from what I hear, he’s actually dead serious about it – I’ve always told people that dude seemed madd humble when I met him at the listening party for Late Registration a few years ago. And in my opinion, he needs some outside fashion help based on the first few efforts I’ve seen him rock from his Pastelle clothing line; I don’t know if the designs are just going over my head, but I’ve liked his previous fashion sense, and this is the amongst the first material I’ve personally disapproved of. But that’s not snark – one thing I really respect about Kanye is that he goes the extra mile in everything that he does – he’ll always put extra effort into his music videos, enlisting artists like Takashi Murakami and KAWS to handle his album artwork,  and I’ve heard stories of him walking between seven studios at once to supervise different songs that he’s working on. He understands that passion and the work ethic/productivity are what’s needed to make things happen, and he’s doing that.

But I digress. COMPLEX magazine just put together a piece chronicling what a day of Kanye West interning would be like. Brendan Frederick – formerly of XXL and Mass Appeal – has really helped revamp COMPLEX’s online content, and I’m proud to say that I’ve gotten to work with him. This is just more of the piff that he’s known to bring. Excerpt:

10:23 AM
• Kanye satisfactorily finishes assignment (after 15-minute break to send Don C out to pick up Louis Vuitton Band-Aids for his paper cut).

10:25 AM
• Kanye sends out second company-wide, subject-only email: “THANK YOU EVERYBODY FOR MAKING MY FIRST COPYING ASSIGNMENT NUMBER ONE IN THIS COMPANY’S HISTORY, EVER!!!! I SENT A COPY OF MY COPIES TO MY BOY FROM THE A AND HE SAYS THE STAPLES ARE PERFECT!!! THIS IS A COPYING AND STAPLING JOB NOBODY CAN FRONT ON!!! IT REMINDS ME OF MY FIRST ASSIGNMENT WHEN EVERYBODY SAID I COULDN’T GET THE COFFEE ORDER RIGHT!!! ME AND THE CANON IMAGEPRESS C1 ARE GONE CHANGE THE DOCUMENT REPRODUCTION GAME FOREVER!!!
